When Connecticut college professor Walter Vale (Six Feet Under’s Richard Jenkins) visits Manhattan to deliver a paper at a globalization conference, he returns to his little-used apartment to discover that globalization has come to him in the persons of Tarek, a Syrian, and Zainab, a Senegalese. His first impulse is to toss them out, but watching them struggle with their meager belongings in the street, he relents, and then an odd sort of family is born.
