Based on a true story, this is a suspenseful adventure film about a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps. Set in 1936, as Nazi propaganda urges the nation’s alpinists to conquer the unclimbed north face of the Swiss massif — the Eiger — two German climbers begin their daring ascent. NORTH FACE is a gripping film with a vivid sense of its historic moment, and an homage and critique of the great German mountain films of the 1920s and 1930s. The Independent, London: “Writer-director Philipp Stölzl evokes a keen sense of period in setting up the story, but once it switches to the mountain face, with avalanches and bitter weather looming ominously, the film becomes as taut as a holding rope.” Sponsored by Concept2.
